Portfolio for My
2026 MFA Applications
Below are images of artworks included in the portfolio I used to apply to Graduate Fine Arts Programs in 2026. I was accepted to more programs than I expected and chose to attend the MFA program in Painting + Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University.
I am posting this portfolio in the hope that it helps future MFA applicants think through what to include in their own submissions. Accepted MFA portfolios are not often made public. When I was trying to figure out what I should include in my portfolio, I only found one person’s MFA application portfolio posted online.
Most schools ask for around 20 images and often encourage applicants to include work in media beyond their primary discipline. In addition to the portfolio, applicants are usually asked to submit one or more statements, such as an artist statement and a personal statement. The most important aspect of a successful application is the portfolio. Then the admissions committee reads your written statements and letters of recommendation and decides whether to invite you for an interview, if interviews are part of their process. During the interview they want to hear how you talk about your work. They may also ask who your influences are and why you want to attend their particular program. A few may even ask what exhibitions you have seen lately and what you are reading, so read.
Good luck on your own applications!
